All members of  the United Kingdom Association of Integrative Therapy will adhere to the code of ethics outlined below:

Client’s Welfare

Members agree to:

  • Avoid sexual, financial, emotional or any other form of client exploitation
  • Protect the safety of clients
  • Show respect for clients at all times
  • Recognise their own limitations and, when necessary, refer the client on to another organisation, doctor or therapist
  • Agree (with the expressed permission of the client) to inform a clients GP of the proposed undertaking to work with a client when a client presents with clinical depression, history of psychiatric illness and / or associated mental health issues
  • Never contradict the medical advice of a clients medical practitioner and will respect the integrity of other health professionals at all times
  • Understand the client’s perspective using empathy
  • Respect a client’s autonomy and work to empower the client
  • Always work in the best interest of the client

Confidentiality

Members agree to:

  • Commit to protect sensitive and personally identifiable information obtained from the course of their work as a psychotherapist
  • Commits to safeguard the anonymity of clients when any material is being considered for publication, always obtaining their verifiable consent before publication
  • Agree to maintain strict confidentiality boundaries, and clarifying any exceptions and ethical and legal limitations with the client before undertaking therapy

Diversity and Equality

Members agree to:

  • Appreciate and honour the diversity of human experience and culture
  • Avoid prejudice about a client’s sex, age, colour, race, disability, sexuality, social, economic or immigration status, lifestyle, religious or cultural beliefs to adversely affect the way they relate to the client
  • Avoid any behaviour that is abusive or detrimental to any client or colleague based on the above factors

Professional Practice

Members agree to:

  • Conduct themselves in a professional manner
  • Ensure that they are in receipt of professional indemnity insurance during the period they are  a member of the UKAIT
  • Practice humility by recognising their own strengths and weakness
  • Agree to adhere to the complaints procedure set out by UKAIT with regard to the behaviour of other members of UKAIT
  • Present evidence of qualifications and insurance verification when required
  • The psychotherapist agrees to produce their qualifications to clients and UKAIT when requested, and commits to not claiming to possess qualifications that they do not have
